Basketball players are back on top.
After Dundee wrestler Austin Miller broke a six-week winning streak for basketball players last week, the Feb. 2-8 Monroe County Region Athlete of the Week honors returned to the hardwoods.
St. Mary Catholic Central’s boys basketball player Ben Martin was the winner with 6,806 votes.
He was followed by three more hoopsters, who all cleared 1,000 votes. Boys players Luke Sliwinski of Gibraltar Carlson (4,839) and Aidyn Stahr of Airport (2,403) placed second and third and Mya Stahr of Airport’s girls team was fourth (1,066).
You can now vote for the Feb. 9-15 poll, sponsored by Sunny Skies roofing, siding, windows and gutters.
Polls will remain open until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18.
Here are the credentials for this week’s nominees in alphabetical order.
Antonio Ayala, Airport wrestling: Rallied after trailing with 30 seconds remaining to deliver a key pin in the Team District finals.
Brenna Baker, Airport girls basketball: Broke the school record for career 3-pointers, pushing her total to 142 with five during a win over Grosse Ile.
Donny Beaufait, Dundee wrestling: Spent less than three minutes on the mat to win a District title, recording pins of :43, 1:07 and 1:03.
Daniel Gemmel, New Boston Huron wrestling: Recorded two first-period pins, then pulled out a 9-8 victory over Wally Sindone of Gibraltar Carlson in the finals to win a District title at 126 pounds.
Luke Henegar, Whiteford boys basketball: Hit every shot from the floor, including five 3-pointers, and scored 21 points as the Bobcats clinched a share of the Tri-County Conference title.
Tyson Hill, Airport boys bowling: Shot 247 and 200 as Jets clinched Huron League title.
Owen Keith, Gibraltar Carlson boys swimming: Set a school record with a time of :57.7 in the butterfly and also won the 50 freestyle and swam on two winning relays to spark a win over Allen Park.
Tristan King, Bedford wrestling: Rolled to a District championship with two pins in less than a minute and two technical falls. Also won by technical fall in the Team District finals.
Braxton Shaffer, Ida wrestling: Pinned in the opening period of his first match, then beat two Dundee entries to win a District title at 113 pounds.
Maggie Smith, Milan girls bowling: Repeated as champion of the Hornet Challenge by averaging 197.
Brody St. John, Summerfield boys basketball: Scored 31 and 30 points during a pair of victories for the Bulldogs.
Jared Tunison, Erie Mason-Ida boys swimming: Swam a leg on the medley relay that set pool and school records and won the individual two individual events during a win over Tecumseh.
Briar Wing, Whiteford girls basketball: Netted a career-high 16 points against Washtenaw Christian.
Abby Zilka, Summerfield girls basketball: Recorded a career-high 15 points against No. 2 Morenci.
