Who won US women's hockey vs Canada game? Takeaways from Olympic matchup

USA women's hockey and Canada has been one of the longest rivalries in recent sports history with both programs combining to win all seven Olympic gold medals and 24-of-24 world championships.

In what's been a one-sided affair in recent Winter Olympic history in favor of Canada, it was the opposite result in the preliminary round.

The United States cruised to a 5-0 victory over a Canada in the countries first meeting in the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

Canada was shorthanded without star captain Marie-Philip Poulin, who was ruled out in the hours leading up to the game after suffering a lower-body injury on Monday against Czechia.

Here were our takeaways from USA women's hockey preliminary finale victory over Canada:

USA women's hockey stats vs Canada

USA's final game in the preliminary round was a dominant one by the U.S., as they controlled play for a large majority of the contest, outplaying their North American counterparts to finish 4-0 ahead of the knockout stage later this week.

Forward Hannah Bilka, who's playing in her first Olympics, led the way for the United States on the scoresheet with two goals.

Defenseman Caroline Harvey and forward Abbey Murphy both chipped in three points in the rout.

Goalie Aaerin Frankel was rarely challenged until the later stages of this game, where she stopped all 20 shots en route to a third consecutive shutout for the United States.

With five more goals, Team USA has shutout three consecutive opponents and scored 17 consecutive goals since allowing their last goal -- the lone one of this tournament -- in the opener against Czechia back on Feb. 5.

USA women's hockey makes history

United States captain Hilary Knight picked up an assist in the win, tying her with Jenny Potter for the most career points (32) in women's Olympic hockey history. She's also tied with Natalie Darwitz for the most career goals in Olympic history with 14.

Defenseman Laila Edwards made history, with the first-time Olympian's third period tally making her the first ever African-American player to score a goal for the United States women's hockey team.

Following their fourth goal in the second period, the United States women's hockey held it's largest lead ever over Canada during Olympic play.

The biggest advantage USA had previously against Canada was a three-goal advantage against Canada in the preliminary round during the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

The final score could've been even larger considering USA women's hockey hit numerous posts throughout the game.

USA continues recent dominance over Canada

Dating back to the 2025 rivalry series last year, the United States women's hockey team has won five consecutive games against Canada, outscoring them 29-7 in the process.

The momentum is huge for the United States, who will likely face Canada down the road, potentially with an Olympic goal medal on line.
