Monroe Country Region basketball roundup for games played Feb. 10

Jefferson and New Boston Huron stayed in the thick of the Huron League boys basketball race.

And Jefferson got a school record to go with it.

The two teams are tied for second place at 9-3 after Jefferson beat St. Mary Catholic Central 49-27 and Huron handled Airport 63-46 on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Both are a game behind 10-2 Riverview in the league standings.

Two games remain in the league race.

Jefferson has a pair of home games – Friday against sixth-place Flat Rock and Tuesday against last-place Milan.

Huron will visit Milan Friday and fourth-place Grosse Ile Tuesday.

Riverview will host fifth-place Airport and makes a trip to seventh-place SMCC Tuesday.

Jefferson (14-5) tied the school record for wins in a season by beating SMCC.

“After a tied first quarter, our defense really stepped up and controlled the game,” Jefferson coach Corey Wiley said.

Trey Oldenburg led the Bears with 13 points while Hunter Barton and Luke Beudrie netted 9 each.

Ben Martin scored 7 points to lead 3-16 SMCC.

Huron (13-6) spread its scoring as Zennon Grant delivered 18 points, Jackson Surma 17 and Cash Moczydlowsky 10 points.

“It was a complete team effort tonight,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said. “We shared the ball, executed offensively, and made shots. Nine players scored tonight.”

BOYS

Whiteford 75, Britton Deerfield 33

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford bolted out to a 32-14 halftime game, then put the game out of reach with a 27-point third quarter.

“It was pretty smooth sailing for us,” Whiteford coach Jordan Bollin said. “We pressed right off the top and never looked back. … I thought our effort was excellent especially defensively. Was a good night as everyone got good minutes and contributed.”

Luke Henegar (20), Cole Griffith (14) and Caden Shroyer (12) all scored in double figures for the 16-3 Bobcats.

Erie Mason 51, Sand Creek 22

SAND CREEK – Erie Mason allowed just 6 points in the second half.

“We came to play on the defensive end,” Mason coach Isaac Skaggs said. “I thought we were solid in the first half, but we really locked in during the second.”

Maddix Wise led the 11-8 Eagles with 15 points.

Ida 55, Adrian Madison 43

IDA – Owen Snyder scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as Ida got its offense rolling after scoring just 15 points in the first half.

“Owen Snyder played outstanding tonight,” Ida coach Jared Karner said. “Not only did he score 21 points, but only had 3 turnovers against a very aggressive defense.

“A big reason for the win was we only committed 10 turnovers.  We had 24 the first time against them.”

Gavin Albring added 12 points for the 12-6 Blue Streaks.

Summerfield 64, Morenci 49

PETERSBURG – Brody St. John scored 24 of his all 31 points in the first half, then sat out the fourth quarter as Summerfield rolled to victory.

“After a very lethargic first quarter, our boys played a really good second and third quarter to put Morenci away,” Summerfield coach Phil Schiffler said. “We experimented with a lot of different sub lineups in the fourth quarter, and they were able to close the gap significantly.

“I was disappointed in how we started and finished tonight, the final score was not what I thought the game really was like.”

St. John also rang up 8 rebounds 6 steals.

Rylee Schiffler added 10 points for the 13-6 Bulldogs.
