Canada’s Maia Schwinghammer finishes fifth in Olympic women’s moguls

Maia Schwinghammer could not quite duplicate her result from the world freestyle ski championships in her Olympic debut.

The Canadian finished fifth with 77.61 points on Wednesday in women’s moguls at Milano Cortina 2026.

Schwinghammer was third at last year’s world championships.

“So close. But you know what, it was not my best performance out there,” Schwinghammer told CBC Olympics.

“I’m happy with how I skied today. I’ve been battling some battles all season trying to find myself back on my feet. This whole week has been the first time I’ve had so much fun skiing again. I know I have more to give. It’s tough to come that close to the podium, especially to know I’m capable of it.”

Americans finished 1-2 with Elizabeth Lemley (82.30 points) taking gold and Jaelin Kauf (80.77) grabbing silver. France’s Perrine Laffont (78.00) earned bronze.

Favourite Jakara Anthony of Australia, the reigning Olympic champ, slipped on a jump and finished eighth.

The Saskatoon-born Schwinghammer was the lone Canadian to qualify for the eight-woman Final 2 medal round after finishing sixth in Final 1.

Laurianne Desmarais-Gilbert was 12th in Final 1, Ashley Koehler was 16th and Jessica Linton was 19th.
