OU football expected to hire LaMar Morgan as new defensive backs coach, per report

NORMAN — It appears Oklahoma football has found its next defensive backs coach.

The Sooners are expected to hire former Michigan defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan, according to The Oklahoma Breakdown podcast’s X account. The podcast is co-hosted by former Sooner football players Gabe Ikard and Teddy Lehman, who are also members of Sooner Sports Radio Network, the university’s in-house broadcast.

Morgan will replace Jay Valai, who coached OU’s cornerbacks since 2022 and left for the Buffalo Bills.

Morgan, who served in his previous role for two seasons, was not retained by new Wolverines coach Kyle Whittingham. Prior to his time at Michigan, Morgan spent two seasons as Louisiana’s defensive coordinator and secondary coach from 2022-23.

The former Ragin’ Cajuns safety previously coached cornerbacks at his alma mater for two seasons and at Vanderbilt for one season. He coached safeties at Houston in 2018 and Louisiana Monroe from 2016-17.

After spending two seasons as a graduate assistant with the Commodores, Morgan coached Western Carolina’s secondary from 2014-15.

Now, Morgan takes over a talented Sooners position group that returns star cornerbacks Eli Bowen and Courtland Guillory.
