A bus crash in Iowa has left one person dead, while more than two dozen others were transported to a hospital.
In a press release shared Wednesday, Feb. 11, the Iowa State Patrol (ISP) confirmed a single-vehicle crash on Highway 4 near Twin Lakes just after 11:00 a.m. involving an Iowa Lakes Community College bus.
KTIV, WOI-DT and KCCI reported that the vehicle was carrying the school’s baseball team.
PEOPLE reached out to the Iowa Lakes Community College for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
The college confirmed members of its baseball team were involved in the crash in a statement to KTIV, noting that they are cooperating with authorities.
"The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority," the statement reads. "The College is actively supporting those affected and communicating directly with families."
Out of respect for the privacy of those involved and their families, the College will not be releasing names or additional details at this time. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available and is confirmed by authorities," Iowa Lakes Community College's statement continued. "The College asks for privacy and compassion for all those affected."
ISP said 33 people were on the bus at the time of the crash, and all were accounted for. Although there was one confirmed fatality, the agency did not identify the name of the deceased.
Footage shared by the news station showed the bus overturned on its side with visible damage to the front as it lay in a ditch before eventually being towed away.
Multiple first responders, including the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, EMS and Rockwell City Police Department, assisted in transporting some of the injured individuals to various local hospitals.
Due to the severity of the collision, others were airlifted to local hospitals by medical helicopters.
At the time of the deadly crash, the baseball team was on their way to play North Arkansas College in games scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 12, and Friday, Feb. 13, the Northark Pioneers confirmed in a Facebook post.
