A 16-year-old Stevens High School, Texas football player died early Wednesday after collapsing during an offseason workout, according to multiple statements from Northside Independent School District officials.
The student, identified by several local reports as junior Jaren Troy Lawson, fainted during Tuesday’s practice and was immediately assessed by athletic trainers before being transported by EMS to a nearby hospital, where he died shortly after midnight.
District officials said Lawson had a current physical on file and no known medical conditions, and an investigation into the medical emergency is underway, according to KSAT. His coach accompanied him to the hospital and remained there throughout the evening, the district noted.
In a letter to families, Principal Ryan Purtell said the campus is “fully dedicated to providing the necessary emotional support and resources” as students and staff process the loss. Counselors remain available on campus.
