Faces off the field gives a deep look into the thoughts and lives of student-athletes from the Austin area. Today we feature Travis High basketball player Reggie DeVore, who considers a trip to Hawaii as his favorite vacation.

All about Reggie: The plan is to save some lives

Tell something about you that most people don't know.

I consider myself a Texan, but I was actually born in Okinawa, Japan.

Outside of sports, what's something that you're really good at?

There's a video game called "Rocket League" that I really like. In terms of skill level, I'm ranked Grand Champion III.

What has been your favorite vacation?

My favorite vacation was when my mom and dad took me to Honolulu to visit my cousins over the summer of 2019. We went to the Polynesian Cultural Center and lots of beautiful beaches.

If you could be any superhero, who would you be?

I would be Iron Man. He's rich, has tech toys and can fly. What else is there to say?

What do you plan to do after you graduate?

I hope to play basketball at the collegiate level. If the basketball team for Texas State or the University of North Texas picked me up, my dreams would come true. But in practical terms, I've been accepted into Texas State, but am still considering becoming a firefighter. That way I can do something meaningful — maybe save a few lives — and playing basketball in my free time would serve to keep me fit for the job. If I go the Texas State route, I'd have four years to study, immerse myself in college life and still play lots of basketball in my free time.

A sophomore season to remember

What has been your favorite basketball memory at Travis?

My favorite memory was after our season ended my sophomore year, we had a banquet for the varsity players and I got my first varsity high school awards that day. I got an All-District honorable mention and the team's Most Improved Player Award.

Do you have any game-day rituals?

I drink a Yerba Mate after school on game day. My favorite flavor is Bluephoria.

If your team was a car, what part of the car are you?

I would be the engine because I move us forward. All of the important parts of the car are able to work together smoothly when I'm on the court because I amplify the focus and the drive.

Dream dinner: Amelia Earhart's story explained on YouTube

If you could have dinner with any four people in the history of the world, who would they be?

I'd have dinner with Kobe Bryant, (YouTube star) Tshaka Taylor, (YouTube star) Mark Phillips and Amelia Earhart.

Why did you pick Amelia Earhart?

I chose Amelia Earhart so she can explain what happened to her in the Bermuda Triangle. I know she's got some stories to tell.

You're in charge of the menu. What are you serving?

Barbecue brisket because it's my favorite food and this is Texas. We'd have all the sides, too — beans, mac and cheese, collards, cornbread, etc. But we all know the brisket is why we're here.
