Man Utd eye shock reunion with Scott McTominay as Napoli admit they can’t hold onto him

Manchester United have been linked with a possible move to re-sign Scott McTominay following comments from Napoli.

Since leaving Manchester United for Napoli in 2024, Scott McTominay has become a fan favourite in Italy, even earning a Ballon d’Or nomination.

But recent remarks from Napoli’s global business development officer Leonardo Giammarioli have raised questions about whether the club can afford to keep hold of him long-term.

“Yeah, of course I’m worried,” he said. “But ultimately, especially Scott, who’s a very nice guy, we’re happy if he gets to the next level in a couple of years – maybe not now, maybe not next year, but he deserves it.

“Look at Stuttgart, they wanted to keep Nick Woltemade,” he added. “But when such an offer comes in, there’s not much you can do when the player wants to go and money is important.”

Since his move to Napoli, Scott McTominay has already found the net 23 times in less than two full seasons. That’s not far off the 29 goals he managed during his time at Manchester United between 2017 and 2024.

Amid that backdrop, Italian outlet TMW has picked up on the speculation around McTominay, noting that he’s still thinking about a return to the Premier League one day.

Their report also suggests Manchester United would be right at the front of that queue if it happens.

“Those who know him well explain that he’s happy in Naples, that he’s content with Napoli. But he also dreams of returning, sooner or later, to the Premier League.

“And among the many teams reportedly ready to welcome him back to England, do you know who’s leading the way? Manchester United.”

Napoli brought McTominay in for £25.4 million. That fee helped strengthen United’s PSR position at the time.

The money from that deal was put towards signing Manuel Ugarte, though he hasn’t fully convinced fans during his two seasons at Old Trafford so far.

If McTominay is sold again, United are set to receive a small percentage of any future fee thanks to a sell-on clause included in their deal with Napoli.

McTominay move back to Manchester United would make more sense down the line

It is not out of the question that Scott McTominay would return to Manchester United in the future, but it is hard to picture him suiting up for another English club.

He has shifted his focus to become a more impactful player in attack and defined his role in the side, after floating between positions during his time at United.

Ruben Amorim’s system might have actually played into McTominay’s hands, providing an attacking slot beside Bruno Fernandes.

If he did return to United, he’d probably have to play deeper or come off the bench behind Fernandes.

But as a squad player, he’d bring something different if United decide they want to move on from Mason Mount.

Still, it feels like McTominay has unfinished business at Napoli and won’t be in any hurry to leave this summer.
