Australia's Josie Baff beat world and Olympic champions to claim snowboard cross gold at the Milan/Cortina Games for her biggest career success on Friday.

Baff, a world championship runner-up from 2023, edged the boarder who beat her for gold three years ago, Czech star Eva Adamczykova, in a thrilling final.

Her tears of joy flowed freely and she named being top of the podium in the elite field "absolutely crazy."

The bronze went to 2018 gold medallist and reigning world champion Michela Moioli of Italy. Like in the quarter- and semi-finals, Moioli had a slow start and trailed by several metres but she came back each time in the fast mid-section under sunny skies.

Swiss teenager Noemie Wiedmer held the early lead after surprisingly reaching the final before eventually fading to fourth.

"Once I made it to the big final, I knew I could do it, and each round that I make it through, I get less and less nervous. Even though the pressure theoretically should be getting more and more, I trust myself more and more," Baff said.

"And I just knew, from no matter what position that I was in out of the start, that I could make a pass and that I had the skills. I just had to let it happen."

Adamczykova, who added silver as a mother to 2014 gold and 2018 bronze under her maiden name Samkova, said: "I always said that I want to complete the collection, so I think it was meant to be."

World Cup leader and former world champion Charlotte Bankes of Britain went out in the quarter-finals for the second straight time at the Games. She lost time early on in her run and never fully recovered.

"I feel like I've done the exact same as what I did four years ago, which is frustrating because we've worked incredibly hard to improve from that," Bankes told the BBC.

"I've been struggling with the track all week, to be honest, but we thought we'd found solutions. I really wanted this one, but too many mistakes and I didn't make the right choices. I knew it was going to be a tight battle and I just didn't pull it off."

The 2022 silver medallist and 2014 bronze medallist Chloe Trespeuch of France, now also a mother, exited in the same round.

Baff's gold was the second for Australia at the Milan/Cortina Games, after Cooper Woods had won the freestyle skiing men's moguls event the previous day.
