The Nonnewaug High boys basketball team clinched its second Berkshire League championship in three seasons in dramatic fashion Friday with a 66-63 overtime win over rival Shepaug in Woodbury.
Robert Metcalfe led the Chiefs with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and Brady Herman produced a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds to go along with five assists. Jack Nettleton added 14 points.
Shepaug forced overtime when freshman David Kersten hit a contested 3-point shot from the right corner with 1.6 second left to tie the score at 59-59.
The Chiefs outscored the Spartans 7-4 in the extra period. Shepaug's game-tying attempt as time expired missed.
James Kersten netted 25 points for Shepaug. Tagan Sivick added 16 and Drew Konik 13.
Nonnewaug (12-0 BL, 17-1) will be the No. 1 seed in the Berkshire League tournament, which starts Feb. 24. The Chiefs are ranked second in Division IV behind undefeated Woodland of the Naugatuck Valley League.
Shepaug (12-5) is 10th in D-IV.
