Chelsea could be forced to sell regular with 24 appearances this summer if contract deal isn’t reached

Chelsea want to offer defender Marc Cucurella a new contract as he continues to establish himself as a key player.

Things are going well at Chelsea at the moment, and there’s a sense that the club want to capitalise and fix the roof while the sun is shining.

There has been a huge amount of money wasted, but one move that has worked out is the one for Marc Cucurella. It’s taken a while for the £60m handed over to Brighton to pay off, but the defender is now a first team essential for Liam Rosenior, and considered among the league’s best in his position.

Because of that, the Blues want to offer him a new contract, according to reports from TeamTalk today.

His current deal runs until 2028, so this is a key moment. If a deal can’t be agreed before the end of the season, the club would have to look to sell him to protect his value. It’s surprising that it’s been left this long, and that is perhaps a worrying sign.

Chelsea have a very strict wage structure in place, and Cucurella is now 27 and knows that this next deal is the biggest he will ever get.

We have no doubt that both sides want to get a deal done, but his demands will be very high and the club will be doing everything they can to keep his earnings down.

In other news…

Lucas Bergvall was apparently a target for Chelsea in January, and while our chances of signing him have gone down, it does seem like he’s a player we’ll be keeping an eye on if things continue to be a disaster at Tottenham.

Chelsea are getting a rare midweek off, and after the game Rosenior also spoke a little about the rotation decisions he had made in the team.
