Cowboys Return to 3‑4 Defense After 12 Years

The Dallas Cowboys will adopt a 3‑4 base defense for the first time since 2012, according to new defensive coordinator Christian Parker.

The Dallas Cowboys will adopt a 3‑4 base defense for the first time since 2012, according to new defensive coordinator Christian Parker.

The team has historically used a 4‑3 scheme, winning all five Super Bowls with that alignment. Parker, who has experience with 3‑4 systems from Vic Fangio, Vance Joseph, Mike Pettine and Mike Elko, said the change will make the defense more multiple and better suited to the current roster, especially the strong defensive line featuring Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark and Osa Odighizuwa.
