HUSKERS SOFTBALL RECAP: The Huskers Get Their 3rd Win of the Weekend:… — and more

After pretty much a week from hell, my fiancé Connor and I are finally moved into our new house, as first time homeowners, and I can finally get going on the softball season with my dad, and fellow co-writer, Andy.

The Huskers are coming into tonight’s game 2-0 so far on the weekend after beating both South Carolina and Hawaii on Friday in run-rule style wins.

This weekends games are being played on some slow pitch softball fields with some makeshift walls that have been put up for this weekend which is very interesting to see in some D1 college games.

Texas A&M comes into tonight’s game ranked #13 in the country and has a 9-4 record so far. They only have one ranked win so far that came on Thursday against #14 Duke. They have lost to Texas Tech who Nebraska beat last weekend.

Nebraska only had one game today after playing two on Friday afternoon. Tomorrow will be another day with a double header scheduled.

The Huskers started off the game with walks thrown to Jordy Frahm and Ava Kushan by Aggies pitcher Sidne Peters. Hannah Camenzind had a fly out while Jesse Farrell struck out. Carlie Mulbach ended the top of the 1st with a pop up out.

The Aggies ran into the same issues as the Huskers did getting no hits in the 1st inning, but getting a couple girls on base due to getting hit by the pitch and being walked.

The Huskers went 1, 2, and 3 in the top of the 2nd leaving the Aggies to possibly be the first to add to the scoresheet. Nebraska’s bats need to start heating up here soon like they were on Friday.

The Aggies’ first batter of the 2nd, KK Dement, hit the first single of the game while Kelsey Mathis followed it up with another single and send Dement to 2nd. Frahm threw her 2nd strikeout of the inning, but quickly put the Huskers in trouble walking Kennedy Powell to load the bases for the Aggies with 2 outs.

The Huskers got out of the 2nd inning unscathed after what could have been a scary situation. Ariel Kowalewski was struck out to end the inning and send Nebraska back up to bat.

The Husker bats finally came alive in the 3rd inning showing how they can quickly take over any game. Lauren Camenzind started it off by reaching base on an Aggies fielding error. Jordy Frahm then hit an RBI single to score L. Camenzind, unearned, to get the first run of the game.

Hannah Camenzind followed this up with a double of her own to send Frahm to the 3rd and put her in position to do more damage which she did when Ava Kuszak hit an RBI double to score Frahm and move H. Camenzind to 3rd.

Carlie Mulbach followed with another RBI double to score H. Camenzind and put yet another Husker in scoring position on 3rd base. Kacie Hoffmann ended up hitting an RBI SAC fly to put the Huskers ahead 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 3rd.

Texas A&M looked for a big response when they got up to bat at the bottom of the 3rd, but only got one run back. Mya Perez was walked by Jordy Frahm to start while Tallen Edwards hit a single to move Perez to 2nd base.

Scout Lovell entered the game to pinch run for Perez and would put a run on the board for the Aggies when KK Dement hit an RBI single to bring the score to 4-1 Huskers. Maddie Sauni and Kelsey Mathis struck out and grounded, respectively, to finished the 3rd inning.

The Aggies had a short stint in the field because of the Husker batters going 1, 2, and 3 in the top of the 4th so back to defense the Huskers go to try and keep their 3 run lead.

The Aggies had no response, though, as they too went 3 and out in the bottom of the 4th. Jordy Frahm got her 6th, 7th, and 8th strikeouts of the day to complete the 4th inning.

Going into the 5th inning, there has yet to be a pitching change for either team with Peters totaling 2 errors and 4 strikes heading into the 5th. Frahm had 1 error and 8 strikeouts.

Hannah Camenzind started the Huskers off in the 5th inning, but grounded out. Jesse Farrell was due up next and said hold my beer as she hammered the ball past the fence for an RBI home run to put the Huskers back up 4 runs and make it a 5-1 game.

The Aggies only had one hit in the 5th inning and that came as their first batter, Mya Perez, hit a double. Nothing came of this though because Edwards and Sauni struck out while Dement flied out. Micaela Wark was able to get a walk out of Frahm, but was stranded.

The Aggies made their first pitching change of the game going into the 6th inning when Kate Munnerlyn came into the game for Sidne Peters on the mound.

When the Huskers took to the plate to start the 6th inning, Kacie Hoffmann hit a single to 3rd base. Katelyn Caneda came into the game to pinch running for Hoffmann.

Hannah Coor showed how quick she can be as she had a bunt single and advanced Caneda to 2nd. Malia Thoms hit for Bella Bacon this time around, but the announcer struggled to realize this until Thoms had struck out.

Lauren Camenzind would give the Huskers their 2nd out of the inning then Jordy Frahm whacked one over the fence for a 3 RBI home run to score Coor and Caneda and put the Huskers up 8-1. The other half of the Camenzind’s, Hannah, ended the 6th with a fly out to center field.

The Huskers made a pitching change of their own going into the bottom of the 6th when Alexis Jensen came in to relieve Frahm and finish the rest of the game.

Frankie Vrazel tried to get things going for the Aggies hitting a single, but was followed up with a Kennedy Powell strikeout next and gave Jensen her 1st strikeout of the game.

Ariel Kowalewski would make sure Vrazel got in to score a run as she hit an RBI double to make the score 8-2 with the Huskers still holding onto a good lead for the time being.

With Kowalewski on 2nd and Mya Perez on 1st, because she was hit by a pitch, the Aggies were in position to put more of a dent into the Husker lead. Alexis Jensen wasn’t worried though as she struck Tallen Edwards out to bring the game to the final inning.

The Huskers weren’t able to add to their run total in the top of the 7th so the Huskers entered the bottom of the 7th relying on Jensen and their defense to end the game with a 6 run advantage.

Texas A&M didn’t help themselves out at all by getting an out right away when Micaela Wark popped up to send the Aggies to 2 more outs on the night. Jensen struck out the Aggies’ final two batters to give the Huskers the 8-2 win and to remain undefeated this weekend so far.

Jordy Frahm would receive the win tonight as she pitched 5 innings tonight with only 1 run against her and 1 error. She also struck out 10 batters.

The Huskers will finish out their weekend at the Mary Nutter Classic tomorrow, 2/22, with a game at 11:00am CST against Seattle and then another game, 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first, against Cal at 1:30pm CST.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Sam Surridge scored two goals Saturday night, Warren Madrigal added a goal and two assists, and Nashville SC beat the New England Revolution 4-1 in the season opener for both teams.

Surridge opened the scoring in the sixth minute and scored on the counter-attack in the 16th to make it 2-0.

Brian Schwake made his MLS debut. The 24-year-old goalkeeper did not record a save.

Hany Mukhtar blasted a rising first-touch shot from point-blank range to give Nashville a 3-0 lead in the 39th minute and Madrigal capped the scoring in the 49th.

Leo Campana scored in the 47th minute for New England. Campana, who scored seven goals last year in an injury-plagued season, had five goals in five preseason matches.

Matt Turner had four saves for the Revolution.

Surridge, who led Nashville with 24 goals last season (tied with Los Angeles FC's Denis Bouanga for second in MLS), signed a contract extension through the 2027-28 season with an option for the 2028-29 season, the club announced earlier Saturday.

Coach B.J. Callaghan signed an contract extension Monday with Nashville. In 2025, his first full season with the club, Callaghan led Nashville to franchise records for single-season wins (22), longest unbeaten streak (15 games) and most goals scored (75). Nashville tied the club’s single-season points record with 54 but lost in the first round of the playoffs to eventual MLS Cup champions Inter Miami.

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — NFL wide receiver Rondale Moore, who played most recently for the Minnesota Vikings, was found dead Saturday night in Indiana, authorities said. He was 25.

Floyd County Coroner Matthew Tomlin did not share additional details on the circumstances of Moore’s death but said there was no threat to the public and an autopsy would be conducted on Sunday.

Moore, a receiver and return specialist drafted in the second round out of Purdue University, spent his first three years in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals.

In 2024, he dislocated his right knee during training camp with the Atlanta Falcons, and he never played for them.

Moore attempted to make a comeback with Minnesota in 2025 but was injured while returning a punt in the first exhibition game.

University of Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm, who coached Moore at Purdue, called him an “ultimate competitor who wouldn’t back down” from a challenge.

“We all loved Rondale; we loved his smile and his competitive edge that always wanted to please everyone he came in contact with,” Brohm said in a statement.
