Rory McIlroy showcased his mastery of challenging conditions at the Genesis Invitational, shooting a 5-under 66 to open the tournament at Riviera Country Club. The world No.3 birdied twice in his first three holes and immediately after a three-hour rain delay, handling the 20-plus mile per hour wind with ease.
McIlroy briefly held a share of the lead before Aaron Rai passed him with a late birdie. The Northern Irishman had one bogey at the 16th but responded with a birdie on the 17th to stay in contention. "I've started to really enjoy this style of golf," McIlroy said, noting his improved comfort in difficult conditions compared to a decade ago.
