Padres Reacts Survey: How do you grade Craig Stammen’s managerial tenure so far?

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Padres fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

Craig Stammen was a reliever for the San Diego Padres long before he was their manager. By all accounts he was a beloved teammate who could relate to anyone on the roster no matter their age, background or nationality. He was the perfect teammate. Perhaps this is the reason it was so surprising that Stammen, who was assisting the Padres front office with managerial interviews before general manager A.J. Preller asked him to consider interviewing for the position, landed the job. Stammen went from being a teammate to the man in charge.

Padres fans were right to wonder if Stammen could assume the leadership role and get the most out of players he played with like Manny Machado and Joe Musgrove. That question has yet to be answered on the field with just 11 games played this season, but it is a storyline that will no doubt be watched and documented as the season progresses.

What we have seen so far under Stammen is the San Diego offense continues to struggle with run production and at times, the defense has been spotty. Of course, at this point in the season there is nothing to say that what we have seen from the Padres under Stammen is what they will be going forward, but like anyone in a new position, there are multiple areas where fans can and should expect improvement as the first-year manager settles into the new reality of being the one making decisions in the dugout rather than running in from the bullpen.

San Diego has played three series under Stammen and will complete the fourth against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday at 9:35 a.m. PST. The Padres dropped the first two series at home winning one game in each before taking two of three from the Boston Red Sox on the road. The series in Pittsburgh is tied 1-1 and San Diego has Michael King on the mound in the rubber match.

For this week’s Padres Reacts Survey Gaslamp Ball asks you to grade Stammen’s performance to this point in the season. There is a lot of time between now and 162, but everyone has an opinion on how things are going, so here is your chance to tell us yours. Results will be posted later in the week.

Albies hits his 3rd home run and the Braves beat the Angels 7-2 following a bench-clearing brawl

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Ozzie Albies hit his third home run of the season, starter Reynaldo López struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings before being ejected after a bench-clearing brawl, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-2 on Tuesday night.

Los Angeles designated hitter Jorge Soler went after López following a high-and-tight wild pitch in the fifth. There was a lengthy staredown before Soler took steps toward the mound and López held out his arms before the two exchanged punches. López was holding the baseball when he landed a punch on Soler’s batting helmet.

Soler homered in the first — the fifth of his career in 23 at-bats against López — and was hit by a pitch in the third.

Atlanta snapped a three-game skid and ended Los Angeles' three-game winning streak.

Eli White had two RBIs for Atlanta, and Matt Olson scored twice. Nine players had at least one hit for the Braves.

Olson doubled leading off the second and scored on a double by White.

Olson walked in the fourth and scored on Austin Riley’s single to tie it 2-all. Riley scored on a sacrifice fly by White, who entered without an RBI this season. Jonah Heim made it 4-2 on a bloop single — his first hit with the Braves.

Atlanta reliever Raisel Iglesias struck out three in 1 2/3 innings for his second save. Tyler Kinley (1-0) retired two batters, both on strikeouts.

Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi (0-2) allowed four runs and six hits in five innings. He struck out eight.

Mike Trout was back in the Los Angeles lineup after being hit by a pitch on his left hand Sunday against Seattle. He went 1 for 5 and scored a run.

Up next

Los Angeles concludes a six-game homestand Wednesday with LHP Reid Detmers (0-0, 2.38 ERA) on the mound against Atlanta RHP Grant Holmes (0-1, 2.45).

3 Bouts That Could Steal The Show At ONE Fight Night 42: Mann Vs. Dzhabrailov On Prime Video

ONE Championship returns to Bangkok’s iconic Lumpinee Stadium with another explosive night of martial arts action this Friday, April 10.

Broadcasting live in U.S. primetime, ONE Fight Night 42: Mann vs. Dzhabrailov on Prime Video delivers a stacked card across MMA, Muay Thai, and submission grappling and is just one of three events going down this weekend.

The headliner features a welterweight MMA clash between undefeated Chase Mann and Dzhabir Dzhabrailov, with the winner making a strong case for the next shot at the ONE Welterweight MMA World Title, currently held by two-division king Christian Lee.

In the co-main event, living legend Sam-A Gaiyanghadao looks to continue his career resurgence against Moroccan knockout artist Elmehdi “The Sniper” El Jamari in a pivotal strawweight Muay Thai showdown.

The supporting card is loaded with explosive matchups and finishers hungry to make a statement on the global stage. Here are three bouts that could steal the show at ONE Fight Night 42.

#1 Black Panther Vs. Paez

It’s open season in the flyweight Muay Thai division, and both Black Panther and Diego Paez arrive in Bangkok determined to establish themselves as undeniable contenders.

This fight was scheduled for ONE Fight Night 40 in February but fell through when Black Panther pulled out due to illness. Now fans will finally get to see them face off.

The 32-year-old Paez recently displayed his technical mastery and sharp combinations to score a statement upset at ONE Fight Night 32 last June over highly touted Johan “Jojo” Ghazali. He arrives looking to build on that momentum.

Standing in his way is Black Panther, who enters on a four-fight winning streak. Armed with a ferocious killer instinct and heavy kicks, he has consistently proven he can end a night in a flash.

When Paez’s technical boxing meets Black Panther’s raw finishing power, expect a firefight — and with the flyweight Muay Thai throne vacant, one of these men could make a strong case for the next crack at gold.

#2 Suakim Vs. Kuzmin

A clash of styles takes center stage when Suakim Pongsuphan PK squares off against Vladimir Kuzmin in a bantamweight Muay Thai contest.

Suakim is renowned for his relentless forward pressure and slicing elbows. He brings a bruising, old-school approach to the ring, dragging opponents into the trenches and breaking them down.

Kuzmin is a master of distance and precision. The Russian uses his length and rapid-fire combinations with superb footwork to dismantle forward-moving fighters, reading their rhythm to land counter-shots before pivoting out of danger.

He is the near-perfect counter to Suakim’s pressure-heavy offense, which makes this one of the most compelling technical matchups on the card.

#3 Perreira Vs. Nakatani

A flyweight MMA clash rounds out the must-watch trio at ONE Fight Night 42, as Joshua “Flyin Hawaiian” Perreira and Gilbert Nakatani look to climb the divisional ladder.

Perreira returns to ONE after overcoming a career-threatening injury and a defeat in his promotional debut against Banma Duoji at ONE Fight Night 29 in March 2025. He brings an aggressive, all-action style and arrives with plenty to prove.

Nakatani looks to build on his own momentum. After testing himself against future — and now reigning — ONE Flyweight MMA World Champion Yuya “Little Piranha” Wakamatsu, he enters looking to use his well-rounded grappling and heavy hands to derail Perreira’s comeback and score a statement win.

Both men are hunting a victory that shakes up the flyweight MMA ranks. This collision could be a candidate for Fight of the Night before the curtain closes.
