Bulls loosies sign contract extensions: ‘These men believe in Ackermann’s vision’
The Bulls have announced the retention of two key loose forwards ahead of the resumption of the United Rugby Championship this weekend.
The URC took a two-week break recently because of the first stages of the knockout rounds of the Champions and Challenge Cup competitions.
Veteran World Cup winner Marco van Staden and rising loose forward star Mpilo Gumede have signed contract extensions with the Bulls. sos-zagle.org.pl
The Pretoria-based team are fighting for a place in the URC top eight. They’re currently in eighth position with 40 points with four matches remaining before the quarter-finals stage.
Van Staden has committed to the Bulls until June 2028, while Gumede has signed a five-year deal that keeps him at Loftus Versfeld until June 2029.
Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone emphasised that these contract extensions are a cornerstone of the franchise’s professional roadmap.
“There has been some outside noise suggesting we are a selling club, but the reality inside Loftus is very different,” said Rathbone.
“Retaining a world-class veteran like Marco and a generational talent like Mpilo is a clear signal of our stability and our ambition. We aren’t just building for next week; we are securing the spine of this team for the next two to three years.
“These men believe in the vision Johan Ackermann is implementing, and we are proud that they see Loftus as the best place to achieve their Springbok and club ambitions.”
The Bulls’ next URC game is away to the Dragons in Wales this Friday.

The 73-year-old will coach at his fourth World Cup, having previously led Iran at the 2018 and 2022 editions as well as his native Portugal at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Queiroz was most recently with the Oman national team, where he reportedly stepped down three weeks ago due to regional instability caused by the ongoing war in the Gulf Region. After coaching Iran at the 2022 edition in Qatar, the veteran tactician guided the Qatar national team in 2023 from February through December that year before taking a hiatus.
Little preparation time for Queiroz as Ghana prepare for World Cup
His new team are counting on Queiroz to guide the Black Stars to a respectable showing at the 2026 finals co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States. A difficult challenge awaits in Group L, where they are grouped with England, Panama and Croatia.
Their opening match will be against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, Canada before traveling to the USA to face England (June 23) in Foxboro, Massachusetts and Croatia (June 27) in Philadelphia.
A disastrous March FIFA window saw previous coach Otto Addo dismissed following two friendly defeats in Europe. The Black Stars were thrashed 1-5 by Austria in Vienna before falling 1-2 to Germany in Stuttgart.
Now Queiroz arrives with a monumental task to whip his new charges into shape with less than sixty days until the finals begin on June 11. At the moment, he only has two official friendly matches before the tournament opener when the Black Stars face co-hosts Mexico on May 22 before dueling with Wales on June 2.
Reports: Sekhukhune United part ways with Tinkler
Reports say Sekhukhune have also part ways with Tinkler’s assistant coach Marc Van Heerden, with the second assistant Paulus Masehe set to stay.
Tinkler’s exit comes shortly after a 1-0 win over Magesi FC. It followed a run of five Betway Premiership matches without a win, along with a Nedbank Cup exit to lower-league side Milford FC.
END OF THE ROAD
The former Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City coach had been appointed in March 2025 as the successor to Lehlohonolo Seema. He initially brought stability to the team, with Sekhukhune enjoying a strong start to the 2025/26 season and even being mentioned as dark horses in the title race.

The target was a top-three finish and CAF qualification, but the team’s form dropped after the mid-season break.
In the second half of the season, results declined, which Tinkler linked to a loss of composure, injuries to key players, and the challenge of integrating new signings. While the team remained relatively solid defensively, they struggled in front of goal and made costly individual errors.

At the time of his departure, Sekhukhune were fifth on the table with 38 points from 24 matches, behind AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs.
Following Tinkler’s dismissal, reports assist assistant coach Paulus Masehe taking over on an interim basis for the rest of the season. Tinkler’s assistant, Marc van Heerden, also left the club.
Meanwhile, the club is expected to make an official annoucement in due course.
