Tilak Varma, the South Zone skipper in the ongoing Duleep Trophy, on expected lines has been selected for the upcoming three-match India-Afghanistan T20I series, starting on September 13 in New Delhi. Tilak is also scheduled to play in the Duleep Trophy final, versus East Zone, in Chennai from September 6 to 10. In that context, with the likes of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Tilak and Ishan Kishan expected to link up with the India squad on or before September 10, it leaves the national selectors and India management in a bit of a quandary.
“I want to play the final,” he noted to a select media gathering after the South Zone-North Zone semifinal played at the Centre of Excellence. “But I don’t know, this match has finally finished. I think the Afghanistan game is on the 13th, so I am ready to play the final. Between the final and the first game, we have two days’ break. So, if I report on the 11th, practice on the 12th, and, from there, I can go to the match. That’s how I feel. But, again, it goes to the selectors and team management. We will have a chat,” he added.
Tilak, who cracked an undefeated hundred in the first innings and followed it up with an unbeaten fifty in the second dig versus North Zone, also opened up on the prospects of Devdutt Padikkal joining the squad ahead of the summit clash. The left-hand batter compiled two hundreds in the Sri Lanka Tests. Tilak said, “That is a good question, I haven’t thought of it. I don’t know, it will be on the selectors.
“You have seen the kind of form he is in. If I am not wrong, he scored three hundreds in Sri Lanka, including that practice game. So someone coming like that into the team will be a big boost as well. The match (Duleep Trophy semifinal) has just finished. We will get to know. If he comes, it will be good for us.”
