Yann Sommer was full of praise for his Inter Milan teammates after the Nerazzurri kept another clean sheet in a 2-0 victory over Genoa at San Siro, with the Switzerland goalkeeper highlighting the collective defensive effort at the club.
Speaking to Sky Sport after the match, with quotes via FCInterNews, Sommer was quick to place the result in its wider context.
Coming just days after the Champions League elimination to Bodo/Glimt, the win represented exactly the kind of response Cristian Chivu had demanded from his squad.
And, indeed, the goalkeeper acknowledged its importance.
“This victory is very important for us after going out of the Champions League,” he said.
“Bodo were very strong, but it was important to react and look forward, and we did that very well.”

On Inter’s remarkable clean sheet record, Sommer was characteristically team-focused.
“A great team must be strong even after a defeat like the one in the Champions League,” he said.
“Last year we had done well, a shame. You always have to move forward together.”
He then offered a touching tribute to the defenders in front of him.
“For a goalkeeper, it is a pleasure to play behind a defence like this. In many games we defend very well.”
Sommer also identified the key ingredients behind Inter’s defensive strength.
“We want to have control of the game and collective compactness,” he said.
“We are hard in duels and we keep our shape well.”
It is a formula that has served Inter brilliantly across the season.
