The 20-year-old joined the Blues last summer from Sporting Lisbon and made his debut at the Club World Cup, but he’s yet to kick a ball this season.

Essugo underwent surgery on an injury picked up whilst on international duty last year, and Rosenior recently confirmed he’d suffered a setback in training.

However, Essugo was seen back in training this week which is a boost, but Rosenior confirmed he won’t make the Arsenal game.

“He’s not yet [fit enough],” he told reporter Bobby Vincent.

“He’s doing modified training, he’s back in, he’s done a few sessions with us which is great but he is not what you would say 100% fit to be part of the squad.”

Essugo was signed as cover for Moises Caicedo, but despite impressing in pre season games against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan he’s not been able to make an impact this season.

However, Romeo Lavia is set to be part of the squad for the Arsenal game after making playing 45 minutes for the under-21s against Leeds last week, and being part of the squad for last weekend’s draw against Burnley.

Chelsea targeting new midfielder in the summer

Despite the options the Blues have in midfield, they’ve reportedly made a new midfielder their priority this summer.

Chelsea are thought to be looking to lessen the burden on Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, and have been linked with a number of names.
