From whistles to winner: Real Madrid midfielder proves he is more than Casemiro’s successor

From whistles to winner: Real Madrid midfielder proves he is more than Casemiro’s successor

There are players who shine with flair, and there are those who build victories quietly.

Aurelien Tchouameni belongs to the second category.

The biggest example of that is that in both Champions League clashes against Benfica, he was voted best player, which was a recognition for the invisible but vital work he brings to Real Madrid.

It has taken time. Three full seasons, in fact.

When Casemiro left for Manchester United, replacing a player of that stature was never going to be simple, but Tchouameni immediately carried the weight of comparison.

The Frenchman has had his ups and downs over the years, and it has been confusing for the neutrals.

This is because, at some point, he receives boos from Real Madrid fans and at other times, some say he is the most vital midfielder in the squad.

To put it in perspective, the most difficult chapter came in January last year. After losing the Spanish Super Cup to Barcelona, frustration inside the Bernabeu was high.

As Real Madrid came on to play the next match after the defeat, sections of the crowd whistled when his name was announced and again during the warm-up. It was a painful moment.

Instead of shrinking, he responded.

So what now?

Since then, the French international has grown into one of the team’s most reliable figures.

Statistically, he is the only Madrid player to have started all 10 Champions League matches this season.

He has missed just four games overall, one through suspension, two due to injury and one for rest. When available, he starts. No debate.

His versatility has also proven decisive, in difficult periods, he has filled in at centre back, helping stabilise the defence when needed.

Three years on from that €80 million investment, the verdict is obvious. Tchouameni has not only erased the shadow of Casemiro, but he has built his own legacy at Real Madrid.
