Virginia Tech softball: Hokies go 5-0 again over the weekend

The Virginia Tech Hokies entered this weekend’s Jane B. Moore Memorial in Auburn, Alabama, 11-2 and ranked No. 11 in the latest Softball America top 25. It was yet another memorable weekend for the Lady Hokies, who were undefeated yet again, winning all five games to improve

Here’s a recap from this weekend’s action:

Game 1: Virginia Tech 15, USC Upstate 4

Michelle Chatfield began this game with a home run, and the Hokies never looked back. Jordan Lynch belted a three-run home run, and Virginia Tech was ahead 4-0 in the first inning. The Hokies scored another to take a 5-0 lead after one. USC Upstate scored three runs in the second inning to make it a game, but Gaby Mizelle responded with a two-run homer to push it back to 7-3. Tech’s offense exploded for eight runs in the top of the fifth, blowing this one wide open.

Lynch had four RBIs to pace Tech, while Mizelle had three. Each had three hits. Sophie Kleiman went four innings to earn the win, allowing four hits, three runs and two walks, while striking out four. She is now 3-1 this season.

Game 2: Virginia Tech 9, Auburn 5

The Tigers jumped on the Hokies early, taking a 2-0 lead. As usual, Virginia Tech had a response, as Rachel Castine plated Tech’s first run in the fourth inning. The Hokies added two more to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Auburn responded with a three-run home run and it was 5-3 heading into the sixth.

VT scored five in the sixth inning to pull away, and Bree Carrico was phenomenal in relief again, pitching 5.1 innings and striking out nine hitters and allowing three runs to earn the win. Carrico is now 4-0. Zoe Yaeger and Nora Abromavage each drove in two to lead the offense.

Game 3: Virginia Tech 8, Troy 0

Lynch hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and the Hokies scored another to take a 3-0 lead, and they never looked back. Chatfield also homered, driving in two runs. Lynch and Mizelle also drove in two runs, while Avery Layton pitched 4.1 innings, allowing only one hit, while striking out five to earn the win and improve to 3-0.

Game 4: Virginia Tech 6, Auburn 2

Auburn didn’t jump ahead of the Hokies in this one. VT scored two in the first to take an early 2-0 lead, led by Addison Foster’s two-run single. Castine belted a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 4-0, while Lynch and Foster drove in another, and it was 6-0. The Tigers scored their only two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Emma Mazzarone went the distance for Tech, allowing three hits and two runs, walking seven, and striking out seven hitters to earn her fourth win of the year (4-1). The Hokies improved to 6-0 vs. SEC teams in 2026 — all on the road.

Game 5: Virginia Tech 11, USC Upstate 3

The Hokies cap off the weekend by sweeping USC Upstate in another blowout. While Upstate scored first, the Hokies responded, scoring in every inning until the game ended after five with an 11-3 run-rule victory. Abromavage and Foster had RBI singles in the first to give the Hokies a 2-1 lead. Tech added four more in the second, highlighted by a pair of home runs from Chatfield and Yaeger.

Chatfield and Yaeger each had three hits for Tech, while Aldridge, Lynch and Foster each had two. As a team, Virginia Tech had 18 hits. Yaeger drove in three, and Foster and Chatfield each drove in two runs.

Mazzarone started the game and pitched two innings, allowing three hits and one run, while striking out three. Kleiman followed her, pitching one inning of scoreless relief to earn the win. Carrico finished the game, pitching two innings and allowing two runs.

It was another great weekend for Virginia Tech softball. Now, the Lady Hokies will come home, or close to home, as they participate in the Hokie Invite in Salem this week. Michigan, Bryant, Radford, Boston College, JMU and Penn State will all participate in this week’s action. Another huge opportunity for the Hokies.
